The Eurasion wolf, an animal both revered and feared for many centuries throughout much of Europe. It is a beast steeped In mystery, often associated with tales of lycanthropy and immersed in Germanic traditionalism. Found as far north upon the frozen tundra of Sweden and to stalk the forested landscapes of mountainous Transylvania.
The Vikings and Anglo-Saxons often taking inspiration from the wolves aggression and cunning. Sometimes consuming a concoction of powerful herbs to become fearless beserkers in battle. Historically described as possessing supernatural powers. Able to shape shift into a hybrid of both wolf and man and even transform into the wolf itself.
Concept For ‘In Reverence To The Wolf’
‘In Reverence To The Wolf’ was written and recorded between May 2019 and September 2024. Created as a tribute to the wolfen lands of Germanic Europe during the medieval period. Exploring esoteric lycanthropy, pagan folklore, the warriors prowess in battle and traditions such as heraldry and hunting in aristocracy. ‘In Reverence To The Wolf’ is one of only two Meresburg albums that fall somewhat into the Metal genre of music. Self described as – ‘Avant-Garde Esoteric Pagan Metal’.
The Album and its Influences
The Compleat Vampire, an interesting book I have owned for a number of years, and refer back to read regularly. This book explores wolf cults and vampirism that were once present within Europe. The author manages to paint a gothic atmosphere, intermingled with pagan lore, poetry and literature. To explain the facts, myths and legends within the dark mists of ancient Europe.
The art of Heraldry has been of interest since childhood. Upon studying banners for the armies of roll playing war games, namely Warhammer Fantasy Battle. And by visiting castles, with their elaborate coats of arms on display. It was fascinating to see such emblems with mythical creatures and animals emblazoned upon the banners. A grandiose presence within many areas of England.
The wolf in particular. An animal for what inspired this album. Appearing on many Coats of Arms in England and Germany. The Burgwedel coat of arms for example, accompanied by the wolf hook or wolfsangel. The wolf hook, a symbol representing wolf traps deployed in some provinces of Germany and France. Associate with werewolf lore and the European wilderness. The Wolfsangel continues to serve as a boundary marker in several forest districts of Lower Saxony. To be featured as the emblem of the Lower Saxony hunters association. Additionally the Hirschmann club, focuses on the breeding and training of Hanover Hounds.
